A micro total analysis system (μ-TAS) is expected to reduce inspection time or the amount of reagent needed. Because of the small Reynolds number in a microchannel, mixing is performed mainly by diffusion. We have proposed an active method to stir a liquid by an optical mixer to improve efficiency. A fabricated optical mixer (SU-8, 20 μm in diameter) is secured inside a chamber at the focal point of the NA=1.4 objective lens and generates flows around it. We have analyzed the micro-liquid velocity vectors and the flux amount around three kinds of mixers (3, 4 and 5 wings) with an upward-directed YAG laser beam at different depths for both horizontal and vertical rotations.
