Weather and environmental satellites that collect earth imaging and scientific data are the ultimate source of “Big Data”. A 2004 study conducted by a Committee on Environmental Satellite Data Utilization organized by National Research Council (NRC) of National Academies coined the term “The Data Tsunami” to describe the increasing data rates and volumes of global satellite observations. Between 2004 and 2014, upward of 100 new satellites were launched with ever increasing sensing capabilities and concomitant increases in data and information volumes. NOAA, the US agency that plans, operates, collects, archives and distributes national weather and environmental satellite data has, to date, a total archive of more than 13,000 terabytes from year 2015 alone! According to another report from NOAA, NOAA’s digital archives have now grown to almost 20 times their 1999 volume at a growth rate of approximately 1.2 petabytes per year. Note that NOAA’s total archive, at the dawn of the 21st century, was then less than 1.2 petabytes. It has become obvious that knowing about “what to do with Big Data” will be a truly significant challenge. Furthermore, dramatic developments in earth imaging capacity are being delivered by ambitious startups that are launching large fleets of small, interconnected satellites. The number of earth observing imaging satellites nearly doubled during 2014 alone. With views into various aspects of global activity being refreshed at a faster rate and higher resolution than ever before, the rapid increase of this vast volume of imaging data is already changing how we use satellite Big Data in the business world. In this paper, I attempt to show how the emerging field of Big Data Analytics is relevant to the vast and growing volumes of weather and environmental satellite data. How are we to harvest valuable weather and environmental information from “The Big Data Tsunami” yielded by national and international satellite assets?

An Atmospheric radiative transfer model calculates radiative transfer of electromagnetic radiation through a planetary atmosphere. Both shortwave radiance and longwave radiance parameterizations in an atmospheric model calculate radiation fluxes and heating rates in the earth-atmospheric system. One radiative transfer model is the rapid radiative transfer model (RRTM), which calculates of longwave and shortwave atmospheric radiative fluxes and heating rates. Longwave broadband radiative transfer code for general circulation model (GCM) applications, RRTMG, is based on the single-column reference code, RRTM. The RRTMG is a validated, correlated k-distribution band model for the calculation of longwave and shortwave atmospheric radiative fluxes and heating rates. The focus of this paper is on the RRTMG long wave (RRTMG_LW) model. In order to improve computational efficiency, RRTMG_LW incorporates several modifications compared to RRTM. In RRTM_LW there are 16 g points in each of the spectral bands for a total of 256 g points. In RRTMG_LW, the number of g points in each spectral band varies from 2 to 16 depending on the absorption in each band. RRTMG_LW employs a computationally efficient correlated-k method for radiative transfer calculations. It contains 16 spectral bands with various number of quadrature points (g points) in each of the bands. In total, there are 140 g points. The radiative effects of all significant atmospheric gases are included in RRTMG_LW. Active gas absorbers include H₂O, O₃, CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, O₂ and four types of halocarbons: CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC-22, and CCL4. RRTMG_LW also treats the absorption and scattering from liquid and ice clouds and aerosols. For cloudysky radiative transfer, a maximum-random cloud overlapping scheme is used. Small scale cloud variability, such as cloud fraction and the vertical overlap of clouds can be represented using a statistical technique in RRTMG_LW. Due to its accuracy, RRTMG_LW has been implemented operationally in many weather forecast and climate models. RRTMG_LW is in operational use in ECMWF weather forecast system, the NCEP global forecast system, the ECHAM5 climate model, Community Earth System Model (CESM) and the weather and forecasting (WRF) model. RRTMG_LW has also been evaluated for use in GFDL climate model. In this paper, we examine the feasibility of using graphics processing units (GPUs) to accelerate the RRTMG_LW as used by the WRF. GPUs can provide a substantial improvement in RRTMG speed by supporting the parallel computation of large numbers of independent radiative calculations. Furthermore, using commodity GPUs for accelerating RRTMG_LW allows getting a much higher computational performance at lower price point than traditional CPUs. Furthermore, power and cooling costs are significantly reduced by using GPUs. A GPU-compatible version of RRTMG was implemented and thorough testing was performed to ensure that the original level of accuracy is retained. Our results show that GPUs can provide significant speedup over conventional CPUs. In particular, Nvidia’s GTX 680 GPU card can provide a speedup of 69x for the compared to its single-threaded Fortran counterpart running on Intel Xeon E5-2603 CPU.

Several studies have shown that a geostationary hyperspectral imager/sounder can provide the most significant value increase in short term, regional numerical prediction weather models over a range of other options. In 1998, the Geostationary Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (GIFTS) proposal was selected by NASA as the New Millennium Earth Observation 3 program over several other geostationary instrument development proposals. After the EO3 GIFTS flight demonstration program was changed to an Engineering Development Unit (EDU) due to funding limitations by one of the partners, the EDU was subjected to flight-like thermal vacuum calibration and testing and successfully validated the breakthrough technologies needed to make a successful observatory. After several government stops and starts, only EUMETSAT’s Meteosat Third Generation (MTG-S) sounder is in operational development. Recently, a commercial partnership has been formed to fill the significant data gap. AsiaSat has partnered with GeoMetWatch (GMW)¹ to fund the development and launch of the Sounding and Tracking Observatory for Regional Meteorology (STORM_TM) sensor, a derivative of the Geosynchronous Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (GIFTS) EDU that was designed, built, and tested by Utah State University (USU). STORM_TM combines advanced technologies to observe surface thermal properties, atmospheric weather, and chemistry variables in four dimensions to provide high vertical resolution temperature and moisture sounding information, with the fourth dimension (time) provided by the geosynchronous satellite platform ability to measure a location as often as desired. STORM_TM will enhance the polar orbiting imaging and sounding measurements by providing: (1) a direct measure of moisture flux and altitude-resolved water vapor and cloud tracer winds throughout the troposphere, (2) an observation of the time varying atmospheric thermodynamics associated with storm system development, and (3) the transport of tropospheric pollutant gases. The AsiaSat/GMW partnership will host the first STORM_TM sensor on their AsiaSat 9 telecommunications satellite at 122 E over the Asia Pacific area. GMW’s business plan is to sell the unique STORM data and data products to countries and companies in the satellite coverage area. GMW plans to place 6 STORM_TM sensors on geostationary telecommunications satellites to provide global hyperspectral sounding and imaging data. Utah State University’s Advanced Weather Systems Laboratory (AWS) will build the sensors for GMW.

Accelerating the RTTOV-7 IASI and AMSU-A radiative transfer models on graphics processing units: evaluating central processing unit/graphics processing unit-hybrid and pure-graphics processing unit approaches

The radiative transfer for television operational vertical sounder (RTTOV) is a widely-used radiative transfer model (RTM) for calculation of radiances for satellite infrared and microwave sensors, including the 8461-channel infrared atmospheric sounding interferometer (IASI) and the 15-band Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A (AMSU-A). In the era of hyperspectral sounders with thousands of spectral channels, the computation of the RTM becomes more time-consuming. The RTM performance in operational numerical weather prediction systems still limits the number of used channels in hyperspectral sounders to only a few hundred. To take full advantage of such high-resolution infrared observations, a computationally efficient radiative transfer model is needed to facilitate satellite data assimilation. In this paper, we develop the parallel implementation of the RTTOV-7 IASI and AMSU-A RTMs to run the predictor module on CPUs in pipeline with the transmittance and radiance modules on NVIDIA many-core graphics processing units (GPUs). We show that concurrent execution of RTTOV-7 IASI RTM on CPU and GPU, in addition to asynchronous data transfer from CPU to GPU, allows the GPU accelerated code running on the 240-core NVIDIA Tesla C1060 to reach a speedup of 461× and 1793× for 1- and 4-GPU configurations, respectively. To compute one day's amount of 1,296,000 IASI spectra, the CPU code running on the host AMD Phenom II X4 940 CPU core with 3.0 GHz will take 2.8 days. Thus, GPU acceleration reduced running time to 8.75 and 2.25 min on 1- and 4-GPU configurations, respectively. Speedup for the RTTOV AMSU-A RTM varied from 29× to 75× for 1 and 4 GPUs, respectively.To further boost the speedup of a multispectral RTM, we developed a novel pure-GPU version of the RTTOV AMSU-A RTM where the predictor module also runs on GPUs to achieve a 96% reduction in the host-to-device data transfer. The speedups for the pure-GPU AMSU-A RTM are significantly increased to 56× and 125× for 1- and 4-GPU configurations, respectively.

The Geostationary Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (GIFTS), as part of NASA's New Millennium Program, is an advanced instrument to provide high-temporal-resolution measurements of atmospheric temperature and water vapor, which will greatly facilitate the detection of rapid atmospheric changes associated with destructive weather events, including tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, flash floods, and hurricanes. The Committee on Earth Science and Applications from Space under the National Academy of Sciences recommended that NASA and NOAA complete the fabrication, testing, and space qualification of the GIFTS instrument and that they support the international effort to launch GIFTS by 2008. Lossless data compression is critical for the overall success of the GIFTS experiment, or any other very high data rate experiment where the data is to be disseminated to the user community in real-time and archived for scientific studies and climate assessment. In general, lossless data compression is needed for high data rate hyperspectral sounding instruments such as GIFTS for (1) transmitting the data down to the ground within the bandwidth capabilities of the satellite transmitter and ground station receiving system, (2) compressing the data at the ground station for distribution to the user community (as is traditionally performed with GOES data via satellite rebroadcast), and (3) archival of the data without loss of any information content so that it can be used in scientific studies and climate assessment for many years after the date of the measurements. In this paper we study lossless compression of GIFTS data that has been collected as part of the calibration or ground based tests that were conducted in 2006. The predictive partitioned vector quantization (PPVQ) is investigated for higher lossless compression performance. PPVQ consists of linear prediction, channel partitioning and vector quantization. It yields an average compression ratio of 4.65 on the GIFTS test data, which significantly outperforms the standard compression methods such as JPEG-2000, JPEG-LS, and CCSDS IDC 9/7M & 5/3.

A revolutionary satellite weather forecasting instrument, called the "GIFTS" which stands for the "Geostationary Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer", was recently completed and successfully tested in a space chamber at the Utah State University's Space Dynamics Laboratory. The GIFTS was originally proposed by the NASA Langley Research Center, the University of Wisconsin, and the Utah State University and selected for flight demonstration as NASA's New Millennium Program (NMP) Earth Observing-3 (EO-3) mission, which was unfortunately cancelled in 2004. GIFTS is like a digital 3-d movie camera that, when mounted on a geostationary satellite, would provide from space a revolutionary four-dimensional view of the Earth's atmosphere. GIFTS will measure the distribution, change, and movement of atmospheric moisture, temperature, and certain pollutant gases, such as carbon monoxide and ozone. The observation of the convergence of invisible water vapor, and the change of atmospheric temperature, provides meteorologists with the observations needed to predict where, and when, severe thunderstorms, and possibly tornados, would occur, before they are visible on radar or in satellite cloud imagery. The ability of GIFTS to observe the motion of moisture and clouds at different altitudes enables atmospheric winds to be observed over vast, and otherwise data sparse, oceanic regions of the globe. These wind observations would provide the means to greatly improve the forecast of where tropical storms and hurricanes will move and where and when they will come ashore (i.e., their landfall position and time). GIFTS, if flown into geostationary orbit, would provide about 80,000 vertical profiles per minute, each one like a low vertical resolution (1-2km) weather balloon sounding, but with a spacing of 4 km. GIFTS is a revolutionary atmospheric sensing tool. A glimpse of the science measurement capabilities of GIFTS is provided through airborne measurements with the NPOESS Airborne Sounding Testbed - Interferometer (NAST-I).

The direct assimilation of satellite-measured infrared radiances into numerical weather prediction and cloud sounding applications is currently prohibited when these measurements include cloud radiative effects. The difficulty arises from the microphysical complexity of clouds and their radiative responses that are only now being adequately modeled for current and next generation satellite sensors. The parameterization of cloud properties to deliver much needed im-provements in speed and accuracy of forward radiative transfer models is still under development. Indirect use of cloud-contaminated radiances by way of cloud-cleared radiances has thus become the initial focus of efforts to improve the spatial density of useful satellite radiance measurements. This is particularly important for satellite sensors with relatively wide fields of view as the probability of entirely cloud-free observations can be surprisingly low. Two classes of cloud-cleared radiance retrieval approaches developed so far comprise the synergistic use of 1) collo-cated infrared and microwave measurements, and 2) collocated infrared imaging and sounding measurements. For example, AIRS/AMSU and AIRS/MODIS cloud-cleared algorithms are being demonstrated by NASA Earth Observing System and are to be adopted by NPP/NPOESS that have similar measurements available from the instrument suites CrIS/ATMS and CrIS/VIIRS. In this paper, the characteristics of these cloud-cleared radiances and their potential for numerical weather prediction and cloudy sounding applications are evaluated. Preliminary results have shown that these two approaches, though quite different in character, are both effective and complementary. Where microwave measurements are unavailable, the synergistic imaging/sounding approach to cloud-clearing is the only reliable indirect use of cloud-contaminated infrared measurements, as is the case for geostationary platforms due to the antenna requirements for a meteorologically useful microwave radiometer at 35,000 km.

The mission of NOAA's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite System (GOES) R series satellites, in the 2012 time frame, is to provide continuous, near real-time meteorological, oceanographic, solar, and space environment data that supports NOAA's strategic mission goals. It presents an exciting opportunity to explore new instruments, satellite designs, and system architectures utilizing new communication and instrument technologies in order to meet the ever-increasing demands made of Earth observation systems by national agencies and end users alike. The GOES-R sensor suite includes a 16 spectral band Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI), an approximately 1500 high spectral resolution band Hyperspectral Environmental Suite (HES), plus other sensors designed to detect lightning and to explore the ocean, solar and space environment. The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) as part of the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the long time partner of NOAA, has developed the first operational end-to-end processing system for GOES. Based on this heritage, and with recent support from the NASA/NOAA Geosynchrous Imaging FTS (GIFTS) project, the Navy's Multiple University Research Initiative (MURI), and NOAA's GOES-R Risk Reduction program, SSEC has built a near-complete end-to-end system that is capable of simulating sensor measurements from top of atmosphere radiances, raw sensor data (level 0) through calibrated and navigated sensor physical measurements (level 1) to the processed products (level 2). In this paper, the SSEC Hyperspectral Imaging and Sounding Simulator and Processor (HISSP) will be presented in detail. HISSP is capable of demonstrating most of the processing functions such as data compression/decompression, sensor calibration, data processing, algorithm development, and product generation. In summary, HISSP is an end-to-end system designed to support both government and industry for the GOES-R system and their related broad scope of acquisition activities.

Imaging spectrometry from geostationary earth orbit (GEO) can provide the frequently-refreshed detailed information on physical properties of earth's atmosphere and surface needed to enable critical new science missions and ultimately improve operation weather forecasting. We describe and evaluate a concept for imaging spectrometry from GEO that addresses both traditional imaging and sounding applications. Our geostationary Wedge-filter Imaging Spectrometer uses spatially variable wedge filter spectrometers to collect earth radiance with approximately 2 km resolution over a 710-2900 cm^-1 spectral range at 1 percent spectral resolution. The resulting instrument, based on LWIR and MWIR wedge-filter spectrometer technology recently developed by Raytheon, would be a compact, rugged imager-sounder with better sensitivity, spectral resolution, spatial resolution and full disk coverage time than current multispectral operational GEO imagers. Sounding performance was simulated with respect to a global database of 119,694 cloud-free samples using a stepwise regression algorithm. Retrieved atmospheric parameters included surface air temperature, surface skin temperature, surface water vapor, total precipitable water vapor, total ozone and vertical profiles of temperature and water vapor. Not only did the conceptual WIS-based instrument outperform the current operation GEO sounder, but also RMS error performance approached that of advance higher spectral resolution sounders. Due to its higher spatial resolution and more compete spatial coverage, WIS could achieve this high quality cloud free sounding performance roughly two times more frequently than high spectral resolution advance sounders. Combining this new technology with proven wedge spectrometer approaches for visible and near-IR wavelengths would provide imaging-sounding data from GEO with unprecedented detail and fidelity for a wide range of weather, climate, land use, ocean color and other earth science studies.

Furthermore, GWIS RMS error performance approached that of advanced higher spectral resolution sounders (e.g., 1.2 K/1 km for GWIS versus 1 K/1 km for advanced sounders). Due to its higher spatial resolution and more complete spatial coverage, GWIS achieves this high quality cloud free sounding performance roughly two times more frequently than high spectral resolution advanced sounders. Combining this new technology with proven wedge spectrometer approaches for visible and near-infrared wavelengths would provide imaging- sounding data from GEO with unprecedented detail and fidelity for a wide range of weather, climate, land use, ocean color and other earth science studies.
