This course starts with an overview of the different topics in the domain of environmentally conscious production, accompanied by a brief introduction in industrial ecology and the life-cycle chain approach. This general picture will be applied to complex products. The different end-of life options of complex products are discussed, and the significance of disassembly is emphasized. Next, the attendees are provided with an integrated approach on disassembly sequencing and the consequences of appropriate sequencing to the product design. The theoretical foundations of decision support systems for sequencing and optimization are expounded. This includes the conversion of the product structure into graphs, the translation of graphs into mathematical models and the calculation of the optimum sequence subjected to different assumptions. There will be an emphasis on the relation of this topic with remanufacturing, reuse and recycling practice, and on design for life-cycle topics.
