Abstract
A simple method for optical buffering management without electronic processing is proposed. The buffer system consists of feedback-looped parallel fibers as first-in–first-out buffers and an optical buffer manager. The buffering system has multiple input ports and one output port. The buffer stores incident packets in order of arrival. The manager controls stored packets and output switches of the buffers by sensing packet flow at the output port. The buffer system can be operated autonomously without an external controller. The buffer performance is evaluated with numerical simulation.
