We review the use of machine learning techniques in ultrafast fiber-optics systems. In particular, we discuss how machine learning can be used to extract useful information in the development of nonlinear instabilities from simple spectral measurements, to predict nonlinear dynamics in optical fibres for a wide range of input conditions, and how experimentally control nonlinear pulse propagation and supercontinuum generation.
