Two all-optical, real-time approaches utilizing plasmonic metasurfaces for manipulating images to enhance phase contrast are presented here. One employs the phenomenon of directional light ‘routing’ in a waveguiding layer while the other relies on the inherent angular sensitivity of plasmonic resonant waveguide gratings. We show that by introducing an asymmetry into the optical transfer function by either controlling the coupling into the waveguide using circularly polarized light, or tilting the device relative to the optical axis produces pseudo-three-dimensional phase contrast images of unstained biological cells and wavefront phase variations.
