Abstract
Scattering of light in the ocean may make the application of structured light ranging methods difficult. An analysis is presented which approximates the effect of backscatter on the signal-to-noise ratio at the camera. Theory as well as laboratory observations indicate that a single scanning light stripe can be used to avoid a substancial part of the backscatter.
