4 March 2015 Self-efficiency improvement and cooling in thulium-doped fibers

Abstract
A way to increase the efficiency of Thulium-doped fiber systems and simultaneously prevent the generation of heat by pumping the excited state around 1460nm has been recently proposed by the authors. In this contribution we show that a Thulium-doped fiber amplifier can lase around 1460nm while simultaneously amplifying signals around ~2μm. Such an operation results in considerably higher amplification efficiencies and in lower operating temperatures without the need for an external pump around 1460nm.
