Abstract
The video coding standards comparison is historically based on objective metrics that do not correlate well with subjective results. The subjective evaluations that are done at the end of each standard development process show significant differences between the objective and subjective metrics. This paper reviews the both approaches and outlines some of the possible difference resulting in these discrepancies. Additionally suggests an approach that will compensate for these differences and help streamline the development of video coding architectures in the future by closing the gap between objective and subjective evaluations.
