Abstract
The aero-optical effects of turbulent boundary layers and separated shear layers are analyzed using the fluctuating density field obtained from large-eddy simulations. The similarities and differences in optical distortions caused by attached boundary layers and separated shear layers are discussed. The numerical database is further used to simulate Malley probe measurements and investigate its accuracy in terms of OPDrms, correlation lengths, and the effects of aperture size and unsteady tilt removal. The use of multiple Malley probes in the transverse direction of the flow is examined to assess its capability to enhance the accuracy of measurements.
