30 August 2010 Light: connecting to the Connecticut science standards

Abstract
With the inclusion of light in the Connecticut Science Standards for 5th grade, classroom teachers were faced with teaching an unfamiliar content area. At EASTCONN, a regional education service center, we were asked to provide teachers with professional development workshops which include essential background knowledge; assist with selecting curriculum aligned with the standards and which fit into an already packed teaching schedule; formative assessments; and finally, ensure that the curriculum provided students with inquiry-based, engaging hands-on lessons. In this paper, we will explore addressing these challenges and demonstrate engaging lessons aligned with the standards.
