Abstract
An automated procedure for lens manufacturing tolerance assignment is described. The procedure makes direct use of Monte Carlo sampling to obtain tolerance assignments. Tolerances are specified so as to minimize manufacturing cost, subject to a constraint on minimum acceptable lens performance. A simulation evaluates the cost-effectiveness of the program and provides quantitative evidence on the cost savings it can provide.
