Abstract
The photorefractive effect of ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) with the application of an alternating electric field was investigated. The consecutive rotationally switching motion of FLC molecules under an alternating electric field was modulated by the photoinduced additional electric field at the interference fringe. This spatially periodic difference in the molecular motions of an FLC was confirmed to operate as a diffraction grating.
