19 September 2001 Mixed-resolution modeling of perceptions in the joint warfare system

Abstract
Faithfully modeling high-level situation awareness is an important aspect of mixed resolution modeling in military simulations. Our work has focused on developing techniques for identifying and tracking aggregate unit perceptions, composed of several sub-components, of land-forces simulated within the Joint Warfare System (JWARS). One of the key features of JWARS is that it separates perception from ground-truth: the information that is provided to one simulated side is derived only from reports generated by the sensor systems. In JWARS, the sensors provide high-resolution information on individual battle-space-entities, but little information on how groups of these sub-units are organized into larger, aggregate units. Our approach utilizes a wide range of distinct computational approaches including: Bayesian statistical analysis, group target tracking, and spatial analysis/clustering. Each of these approaches, within the overarching model, incorporates known doctrinal information on the force-structure and tactics of the simulated force. This aggregation model provides a mechanism for integrating the numerous high-resolution sensor reports in to a consistent lower-resolution description of the simulated land forces in the battlespace.
