Abstract
A fully automated algorithm is presented that computes the epicardial and endocaridal borders of the left ventricle of the heat for an echocardiographic image sequence acquired from the apical 4-chamber view. The method is tested for agreement against borders drawn by an expert on a prospective patient database of 68 patients. Since two cycles were acquired for all but 1 patient, a total of 135 image sequences were considered. The mean differences bewteen expert and computer generated endocardial borders were 5.13mm and 5.81mm at the end diastole and end systole, respectively. The mean differences between the epicardial borders at the end diastole and end systole were 5.09mm and 5.22mm respectively.
