Abstract
This paper presents a new method for 2D image transmission using optical encoding through a row of optical fibers. The basic principle is to encode the 2D image in two different directions by wavelength-multiplexing encoding and time encoding respectively. As the two directions are incoherent, appropriate directions should be chosen to ensure the quality of the 2D image transmission. In this way, the information of the image can be transmitted overall through the fiber bundle. The transmission signal is pure optical and the channel capacity of optical fibers can be utilized more efficiently. Analyses and experiments show that the best image quality is achieved when the above two directions are vertical. In our experiments, the image transmitted through the row of optical fibers made of 500 fibers has more than 900 X 900 pixels, and the image color is undistorted.
