17 May 1996 IR and He-Ne laser in the treatment of wounds and painful disorders in horses and in dogs

Abstract
To evaluate the therapeutic applications of laser, 3 dogs and 26 horses were selected for the treatment of skin lesions, and 1 dog and 16 horses for analgesic treatment. The equipment used consisted of either red or infrared light laser apparatuses modified in order to increase the manageability and the power of the instrument. It was observed that He-Ne laser allowed a more rapid restitutio ad integrum with a lesser amount of J/cm2 and so apparatuses were advantageous for the treatment of fistolous tracts complicated by abscess formation. In fact, by using sterilizable optical fibers, it was possible to reach the deeper parts of the tract. When considering the rapidity of the healing process of different body areas, the withers seems to necessitate the longest period of time to recover. Infrared laser is best used for pain relief and satisfactory results were observed without resting the animals. Significant and beneficial effects from laser therapy are obtained after 7 - 10 days of therapy.
