Abstract
In this paper, we present the design of the HARMONI Adaptive Optics Calibration Unit (AOCU). The AOCU features on-axis sources covering 0.6 to1.8 μm with controllable wavefront shapes and supports natural guide-star wavefront sensors for SCAO, HCAO, and LTAO. It is crucial for calibrating wavefront sensors, internal interaction matrices, non-common path aberrations (NCPAs), and the pointing model zero position. The illumination assembly includes four diffraction-limited sources and a resolved source, using an endlessly single-mode fibre and a multimode fibre to couple several LED sources efficiently. We focus on the light-injection module, presenting photometric budgets. Despite significant attenuations (10-6 to 10-10), the scheme delivers the required beam quality in flux and geometry. This design's performance and flexibility make it suitable for the AOCU and replicable for other internal light sources of HARMONI.
