Abstract
This paper presents a non-contact method for characterizing junction temperature (Tj) of GaN-based blue LED using the centroid wavelength combined with the full width at half maximum (FWHM). By establishing the relationship between the centroid wavelength, FWHM, junction temperature, and driving current of LED, a method employing combination centroid wavelength and FWHM for junction temperature characterization is derived. Ten GaN-based blue LEDs are chosen as samples, which junction temperatures are measured under various operating conditions using both the new method and forward voltage method. The research demonstrates that the new method characterizes effectively Tj of GaN-based blue LED with an average error of 2.3°C. This study holds significant importance in LED design and application.
