Abstract
In this paper target tracking as an hierarchical information extraction process is defined and spatio-temporal factors in vision affecting motion detection are briefly discussed. The relativistic aspects of motion perception which quantify perceived extent, time, and velocity of moving objects are introduced. A systems approach to the operator-display interaction is also investigated and the role of the human operator as an optimal position and velocity estimator and controller is presented.
