Long term reliability of optical fibers is extremely important for fiber optic system performance over a long period of time in different application environments. The reliability of silica based optical fibers and heavy metal fluoride optical fibers is consid-ered. The mechanical reliability and the effect of radiation in optical performances are discussed in this paper.
