Abstract
The criteria for the transition of laser beams to the regime of the strong optical turbulence based on the variance of intensity fluctuations and the shape of the profile of the average beam intensity in the atmosphere are discussed. Estimates of the path length are made for fixed values of the structural characteristics of fluctuations of the refractive index of the medium, during which the transition to the regime of strong intensity fluctuations a loss of dependence of intensity distribution of laser beam on its initial intensity distribution at the source plane occurs. It is shown that an increase in topological charge leads to an increase in the critical path length, at which the transition of the vortex beam to the regime of strong optical turbulence occurs.
