Abstract
This paper is a brief introduction to design and performance factors in high resolution color image digitization systems. High resolution is defined as 1024x1024x24 or 2048x2048x24 bits per image where eight bits per pixel is used to represent each of the three (red, green and blue) color components. To investigate design considerations in such a system, a locally integrated experimental prototype, based on relatively inexpensive and individually acquired components, was developed. The core of this system is a high resolution camera that utilizes a solid state charge coupled device (CCD) sensor array. One objective in building the prototype is to determine the feasibility of using high resolution digital imaging techniques to present educational material to medical students. Essential system elements and critical parameters are discussed; potential problem areas are mentioned.
