Abstract.  Wheel steer angle information is crucial for the estimation of vehicle sideslip. Different from previous detection methods using angle sensors, this work presents a new wheel steer angle detection method based on a computer vision system providing image sequences recorded by a camera mounted on a car. The difference between wheel steering right and left is analyzed to determine steer direction while wheel steer angle in the image is derived from the information of the wheel contour extracted by the threshold segmentation and edge extraction. Experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed approach.
